About Me
I am a father to a lovely little girl, Sidney, and a husband to a beautiful, hard working lady, Jennifer. Jennifer and I were married in 2000 and Sidney came into our lives in 2006. In addition to the "humans" in our household, we have a black cat, Willie, and a chocolate Labrador retriever, Sadie, who at one time was the princess of our small castle. Since the birth of Sidney, Sadie, has been demoted but has lost no attention or love. If anything she has gained a little buddy that likes to share food with her. Willie's lifestyle hasn't changed too much, he still keeps our bed warm and gets plenty of attention from Sidney.
I'm currently living the dream, well at least my dream, as an automotive engineer for a small company called General Motors. You may have heard of them. However, if not I suppose you should come out from underneath the rock you have been living under for the past century. I took a very long and diversified road to get to where I am today. I suggest you get comfortable, as this is a detailed story.
I was born and raised on the outskirts of Indianapolis, IN. I attended pre-school... wait maybe that's too much detail and too far back? How about I start in 1995? After four years of math and shop classes, I think I took some other types of classes too but it's all a big haze, I graduated from Franklin Central High School and left home to pursue a higher education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
I began my four year stint at Purdue in Aviation Technology. Due to my unique abilities to see the job market of the future, I quickly switched tracks and began looking at Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology. Still confused, I took a class from Krannert School of Management at Purdue. This class was MGMT 200 and was the most difficult class I had taken to date. The class was a turning point in my life, however, as this is when I learned how to study. After struggling through this class and nearly having a heart attack during the final, I decided to make it my mission in life to beat this school at its own game. Being challenged drove me to deciding on the path of a degree in Accounting.
During my junior year at Purdue I met the future Mrs. Haughs in a statistics class. We had a lot in common and quickly hit it off. Of the things we had in common, we both had a passion for travel and had both already been planning to study abroad during the summer of 1998. We settled on summer classes at Oriel College of the famous Oxford University. While I'd like to brag and say I took classes at Oxford University, the greatest portion of my education that summer was cultural. The summer abroad living in England and traveling Europe was life changing.
After graduating in 1999 with a BS in Accounting from Purdue University and a beautiful new fiance, I went to work for a public accounting firm in Indianapolis by the name of Sherck, Hussey and Johnson. After about a year and a half I decided that accounting had lost its luster to me. Even though I had a great job and great bosses it was time to move on.
I had spent a good portion of my life playing with computers and came to the conclusion that it was something I enjoyed and could make money at. Job number two after college got me closer to where I am today and was fun for about a week. I worked for an automobile auction company that we will just call The Dark Side. My boss was pretty much the dullest knife in the drawer and had seemed to be running on a bare minimum of brain cells. Just picture the classic movie Office Space. I played a support role for the organization's in house written software. Due to my accounting background I would spend about 50% of my time on the road doing training and database conversions for the accounting side of the operation. I did make some great fiends at this job so it wasn't a complete loss. When I was back in the office I was a phone jockey that just couldn't solve the world's problems fast enough. Though it was hard to be quick with a different boss poking his head in my cube every 10 minutes. After about 10 months of this I had had enough and decided it was time to do something rewarding with my life.
Late in 2001 I made the decision to go back to school. I decided I wanted to go back for computers and come out doing something with network communications. In August of 2002 I started on my journey of becoming an engineer. Having an undergraduate degree in accounting is not really the best degree to have when you decide to pursue a graduate degree in engineering! Although I am happy to have that background and feel like a more complete person because of it, I had to start from scratch. I spent around a couple years going to school part time and working as an accountant/computer nerd part time while I was playing catch-up and taking undergraduate engineering classes to prepare myself for graduate school. Once in the masters program at Purdue University's Indianapolis campus, I stopped working and dedicated myself to the program. I chose a thesis option to get the most out of my education. My research in Wireless ad hoc Networks has been published and presented by myself at a conference in Miami. This was a very fulfilling achievement.
Upon completing my thesis and graduating with a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, I scored the perfect job for me! This is where I am currently. Everyday I get to play with computers and automobiles and they even sent me to trucker school to get a Class A CDL, a guy's gotta have a retirement plan! Automotive engineering couldn't be a better fit for me, take a look at my hobbies and you will see why. This is where I am today and hope to still be here in twenty years.
But enough about my education and work history, that's not what this site is about. Outside of work you can still find me playing with cars and computers or hanging out with friends and family. I am an active person with a variety of hobbies and interests. Family comes first to me and I look forward to the end of the day when I can go home and be with my family. Take a look around my website and you'll get a better feel for who I am and what makes up my life. Drop me a line here and let me know who you are and what brings you here. I hope you have found something useful or entertaining during your stay.
